I also liked how the author improved on the source material by solving plot holes or filling in gaps that were never explained in the movie. And the couple who raise Anna aren’t just treated as a convenient plot point, but are fully realized three-dimensional characters who have multiple scenes in which we can see they have developed a loving and believable bond with their adopted daughter. The royal couple originally made very little impact with the Queen only having a single line of dialogue and she wasn’t even given a name! In this book, they’re fleshed out so much more and their relationship with their daughters feels solid and real, making it even sadder once their ship is lost at sea (I hoped it wouldn’t happen, even though I knew it had to, that’s how invested I was in them). What made this a great read was how much more depth was given to all of the characters, regardless of whether they were major or secondary. Some of the scenes take place in a near-identical fashion to the movie, but with the sisters being swapped around, for instance, Hans starts off courting Elsa instead of Anna.
